Red Sox place Andrew Benintendi on injured list

Club Recalls Right-Handed Pitcher Ryan Weber from Alternate Training Site

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today placed outfielder Andrew Benintendi on the 10-day injured list with a right rib cage strain. To fill Benintendi’s spot on the active roster, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber from the Alternate Training Site.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Benintendi, 26, went 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch last night against the Tampa Bay Rays. He leads the Red Sox and ranks tied for sixth in the American League in walks (11), as he entered today with a .314 on-base percentage. Benintendi has started 12 of Boston’s 17 games, all in left field, and has batted leadoff eight times. On the season, he is 4-for-39 (.103) with four runs scored.

Weber, 30, made his first Opening Day roster this season. He started Friday against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park, giving up two runs in 3.0 innings in the Red Sox’ 5-3 victory. The right-hander has made three starts for Boston this season, going 0-2 with a 9.90 ERA (11 ER/10.0 IP). He owns a career 5.43 ERA (75 ER/124.1 IP) in 45 major league outings (14 starts) for the Atlanta Braves (2015-16), Seattle Mariners (2017), Rays (2018), and Red Sox (2019-20).
