May 15th, 2021

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock on the COVID-19 Related Injured List (side effects from vaccination). To fill Whitlock’s spot on the active roster, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer from Triple-A Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Whitlock, 24, has posted a 1.77 ERA (4 ER/20.1 IP) and a 0.98 WHIP with 21 strikeouts against three walks in 10 appearances this season, the first of his major league career. Acquired by the Red Sox in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft, the right-hander made Boston’s Opening Day roster and allowed zero runs in his first 13.1 innings. Selected by the Yankees in the 18th round of the 2017 June Draft, Whitlock missed the second half of the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in July.

Brewer, 28, has made one relief appearance for Worcester this season, allowing one run in 1.0 inning on Wednesday against Syracuse. The right-hander made four starts and seven relief appearances for Boston in 2020, posting a 3.97 ERA (5 ER/11.1 IP) in relief. Brewer is 2-5 with a 4.70 ERA (47 ER/90.0 IP) in 80 career appearances between the San Diego Padres (2018) and Red Sox (2019-20).
