Red Sox recall right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta from alternate training site

BOSTON, MA— The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta from the Alternate Training Site. To make room on the active roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Robert Stock to the Alternate Training Site. 

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement. 

Pivetta, 27, will wear number 37 and start tonight’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. The right-hander made his third Opening Day roster with the Phillies in 2020 and made three relief appearances before being traded to the Red Sox on August 21. He is 19-30 with a 5.50 ERA (242 ER/396.1 IP) and 421 strikeouts in 92 career appearances (71 starts), including 3-2 with a 3.30 ERA (23 ER/62.2 IP) against American League opponents. A native of British Columbia, Canada, Pivetta was selected by the Washington Nationals in the fourth round of the 2013 June Draft and traded to the Phillies in exchange for Jonathan Papelbon on July 28, 2015. 

Stock, 30, has made 10 appearances over three stints with the Red Sox this season, going 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA (7 ER/13.1 IP) and 14 strikeouts. The right-hander made his major league debut in 2018 and posted a 2.50 ERA (11 ER/39.2 IP) in 32 appearances—all in relief—with San Diego, then made the Padres’ 2019 Opening Day roster. Stock was claimed by Boston off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on July 26, 2020.
