Texas Rangers activate RHP Luke Farrell from 60-day injured list

LHP Locke St. John optioned to Nashville; RHP Shane Carle designated for assignment

August 23rd, 2019

Chicago, Illinois—Texas Rangers today announced that right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell (#60) has been activated from the 60-day injured list and will be in the bullpen for Friday night’s game against the White Sox in Chicago.

To make room for Farrell on the active roster, left-handed pitcher Locke St. John has been optioned to Triple-A Nashville. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Shane Carle has been designated for assignment.

Farrell has spent the entire 2019 season on the injured list. The right-hander sustained a non-displaced fracture of his jaw and a concussion when he was hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of San Francisco’s Jalen Miller in a spring training game on March 2 in Scottsdale.

Farrell has spent the majority of the season recovering and rehabbing at the Rangers’ Arizona complex. He has posted a 3.86 ERA (8 R/6 ER/14.0 IP) in 9 appearances on rehab assignment. Farrell began his rehab assignment on July 23 with the Rookie Arizona League Rangers, allowing 8 hits and 6 runs/5 earned runs in 5.1 innings over 4 starts.

He was assigned to Double-A Frisco on August 6 and has posted a 1.04 ERA (2 R/1 ER/8.2 IP) in 5 games, working 7.2 scoreless innings with 9 strikeouts in his last 4 outings. Farrell’s last appearances was on August 20 when he pitched 2.0 scoreless innings against Springfield.

Acquired on a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Angels on January 4, 2019, Farrell is 3-4, 5.28 in 30 games/3 starts with the Royals (2017), Reds (2017), and Cubs (2018). His last Major League appearance was a loss in a start on July 23, 2018 versus Arizona with Chicago.

St. John pitched a scoreless inning on Wednesday versus the Angels after being recalled from Nahsville earlier in the day. He has a 5.40 ERA in 7 overall appearances with the Rangers in 2019. Carle had been on option at Nashville since being acquired from Atlanta for cash considerations on July 25. He is 1-0, 8.10 in 7 games with the Sounds and 5-2, 5.63 in 27 overall appearances with Gwinnett and Nashville this season.

Following these transactions, the Rangers still have 40 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with six players on the 60-day injured list: LHP Jesse Biddle, LHP Taylor Hearn, RHP Nate Jones, LHP Yohander Méndez, LHP Jeffrey Springs, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
