Twins recall Louie Varland

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul.

Varland has made two starts for the Twins this season, going 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA (10.1 IP, 6 ER), three walks and 10 strikeouts. The St. Paul, Minnesota native has gone 8-5 with a 3.06 ERA (126.1 IP, 43 ER), 42 walks and 146 strikeouts in 24 games (23 starts) between Double-A Wichita and Triple-A St. Paul this season and was recently named Twins Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America.

To make room for Varland on the 28-man roster, the Twins have designated right-handed pitcher Aaron Sanchez for release or assignment. Sanchez appeared in seven games (3 starts) for the Twins, going 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA (27.0 IP, 12 ER), seven walks and 25 strikeouts.
