Twins reinstate Bailey Ober from 10-day injured list, select contract of Trevor Megill
Devin Smeltzer optioned to Triple-A St. Paul; Josh Winder placed on 15-day Injured List; Chris Vallimont designated for release or assignment
KANSAS CITY, MO – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have returned right-handed pitcher Bailey Ober from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 10-day Injured List, and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Trevor Megill from Triple-A St. Paul.
Ober, who missed the Twins’ last 20 games with a right groin strain, made one start on rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on May 15 at Columbus, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing five runs (4 earned), with four hits allowed and seven strikeouts. He went 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA (19.2 IP, 6 ER), five walks and 16 strikeouts in four starts for the Twins prior to exiting his outing on April 28 vs. Detroit. Ober is scheduled to make the start in tomorrow afternoon’s series finale against the Kansas City Royals.
Megill, 28, has gone 0-2 with a 3.27 ERA (11.0 IP, 4 ER), four walks, 15 strikeouts, two saves and a 1.36 WHIP in nine relief outings for the Saints this season, after signing a minor league contract with the Twins in December 2021. He made his major league debut for Chicago-NL on April 26, 2021 and has gone 1-2 with an 8.37 ERA (23.2 IP, 22 ER), eight walks and 30 strikeouts in 28 career major league appearances, all with the Cubs last season.
To make room on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned left-handed pitcher Devin Smeltzer to Triple-A St. Paul and placed right-handed pitcher Josh Winder on the 15-day Injured List (retroactive to May 18) with right shoulder impingement. Smeltzer, 26, had his contract selected on May 14 and started two games for the Twins, going 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA (10.1 IP, 2 ER), three walks, two strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP. Winder, 25, made his major league debut on April 12 and appeared in seven games (3 starts) for the Twins, going 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA (29.1 IP, 12 ER), nine walks, 23 strikeouts and a 1.23 WHIP.
To make room for Megill on the 40-man roster, the Twins have designated minor league right-handed pitcher Chris Vallimont for release or assignment. Vallimont, 25, has gone 0-2 with a 9.95 ERA (19.0 IP, 21 ER), 23 walks and 20 strikeouts in seven games (6 starts) for Double-A Wichita this season. He was acquired by Minnesota via trade from the Miami Marlins on July 27, 2019 and is currently listed as the No. 22 prospect in the Twins organization, per MLB.com.
