White Sox agree to terms on one-year contracts with Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on one-year contracts with right-handed pitchers Lucas Giolito ($4.150-million) and Reynaldo López ($2.1-million), avoiding arbitration with both players.

Giolito, 26, finished seventh in the 2020 American League Cy Young voting after going 4-3 with a 3.48 ERA (28 ER/72.1 IP), 97 strikeouts, 1.04 WHIP and .184 (47-255) opponents average in 12 starts. He ranked among the AL leaders in strikeouts (2nd), strikeouts per 9.0 IP (12.07), opponents average (3rd), hits per 9.0 IP(3rd, 5.85), opponents slugging (4th, .310) and opponents OPS (4th, .577). Giolito threw his first career no-hitter on August 25, 2020 vs. Pittsburgh, allowing just one walk with a career-high tying 13 strikeouts.

Giolito is 31-28 with a 4.33 ERA (225 ER/467.2 IP), 484 strikeouts and four complete games (three shutouts) in 80 starts over four seasons (2017-20) with the White Sox. He was acquired by Chicago with López and right-hander Dane Dunning from Washington in exchange for outfielder Adam Eaton on December 7, 2016.

López, 27, went 1-3 with a 6.49 ERA (19 ER/26.1 IP) and 24 strikeouts in eight starts last season, his fourth with the club. He is 21-31 with a 4.76 ERA (236 ER/446.2 IP), 374 strikeouts and one complete game in 81 starts with Chicago since being acquired from Washington.
