May 25th, 2019

Anaheim, Calif. — The Texas Rangers today announced that shortstop Elvis Andrus has been activated from the 10-day injured list. Andrus is in the starting lineup for tonight’s 9:07 CT game in Anaheim. Following Friday’s game, the club optioned outfielder Delino DeShields to Triple-A Nashville.

Andrus was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 15 with a right hamstring strain. He played on rehab assignment for Double-A Frisco on Tuesday and Wednesday, going 1-for-6 with one home run and one RBI in 2 games as the designated hitter. He is batting .325 with 6 home runs and 26 RBI in 38 games for the Rangers this season, ranking among American League leaders in batting average (5th) and multi-hit games (T8th, 16). This was the second career injured list stint for Andrus, who was also sidelined from April 12-June 17, 2018 with a olecranon fracture in his right elbow. He had never previously been on the injured list prior to last season.

DeShields has batted .182 with one home run and 10 RBI in 32 games with the Rangers this season. This was his second stint with the Rangers this season (Opening Day-May 8, May 22-24). He appeared in 2 games as a pinch runner and defensive replacement during his most recent stint. His 8 stolen bases are tied with Andrus for the team lead and rank T7th in the American League. DeShields has spent the balance of the year with Nashville, batting .211 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI in 9 games.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the major league roster, along with four players on the 60-day injured list: RHP Luke Farrell, OF Scott Heineman, LHP Yohander Méndez, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
