Rangers add C Carlos Perez to active roster, recall LHP Yohander Mendez

Pérez was received on a waiver claim from the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday and has been added to the 25-man roster after joining the club today. The 27-year-old batted .143 (3-21) in 8 games/6 starts at catcher for Atlanta this season, throwing out 2 of 5 attempted base stealers. He was designated for assignment by the Braves on April 27 after being acquired in a March 31 trade with Los Angeles-AL after the Angels had designated him for assignment on March 27. A career .221 hitter in the major leagues, Pérez has thrown out 52 of 136 (38.2%) runners attempting to steal against him.
Méndez is seeking his first major league action this season after spending the campaign at Round Rock, where he has gone 0-3 with a 6.66 ERA (18 ER/24.1 IP) in 5 games/starts. Pacific Coast League opponents have batted .302 with 14 walks and 15 strikeouts against Méndez in 2018. He posted no record and a 2.92 ERA (4 ER/12.1 IP) over 6 games/2 starts for the Rangers this spring before he was optioned to Round Rock on March 18. A September call-up for Texas in both 2016 and 2017, Méndez has gone 0-1 with a 7.63 ERA (13 ER/15.1 IP) in 9 career major league games, all in relief.
The Rangers have 7 days to trade, release, or outright Centeno the minor leagues. The club's backup catcher all season to this point, Centeno has batted .162 (6-37) with one home run and 3 RBI in 10 games/9 starts for the Rangers.
Gardewine posted 2.0 scoreless innings on Wednesday at Cleveland after being recalled prior to the game. He has allowed 2 runs in 5.0 innings over 3 relief appearances spanning 2 stints with the Rangers this season (March 31-April 1, May 2).
Following these transactions, the Rangers have 39 players on the major league roster along with 6 players on the 60-day disabled list.
