Prior to tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox activated second baseman Dustin Pedroia from the 10-day disabled list and placed right-handed pitcher Blaine Boyer on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to August 6) with a neck strain.

Pedroia, 33, was placed on the disabled list on August 1 (retroactive to July 29) with left knee inflammation. He leads the Red Sox in batting average (.307) and on-base percentage (.381), having gone 103-for-336 with 17 doubles, six home runs, and 54 RBI. He is the only qualifying American League player with more walks (40) than strikeouts (37). In 27 games since June 26, Pedroia has batted .348 (39-for-112) with a .934 OPS, hitting four home runs in his last 17 games. He leads major league second baseman in fielding percentage (.997), with his lone error of the season coming on July 19 and snapping an errorless streak of 114 games, marking a Red Sox career record at the position. The 2007 AL Rookie of the Year, 2008 AL Most Valuable Player, and two-time World Series champion (2007, 2013) has hit .301 (1,786-for-5,930) with a .367 on-base percentage in 1,483 career games, all with Boston.
Boyer, 36, has held opponents scoreless in 17 of his 22 appearances with Boston this season, going 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA (10 ER/28.0 IP) and 21 strikeouts against nine walks. Before being selected to the major league roster on May 28, the right-hander pitched in 10 games for Triple-A Pawtucket, allowing five earned runs over 14.1 innings (3.14 ERA) and striking out 12. Originally selected by Atlanta in the third round of the 2000 June Draft, Boyer has a 4.11 ERA (198 ER/433.1 IP) and four saves in 416 career appearances, all in relief, over parts of 11 major league seasons with the Braves (2005-2009), St. Louis Cardinals (2009), Arizona Diamondbacks (2009-10), New York Mets (2011), San Diego Padres (2014), Minnesota Twins (2015), Milwaukee Brewers (2016), and Red Sox (2017).
