President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Rodriguez, 24, has made 10 starts for the Red Sox this season, posting a 4-2 record and a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) while striking out 65 and limiting opposing hitters to a .222 batting average (49-for-221). He compiled a career-long four-game winning streak over seven starts from April 23-May 26, recording a 2.25 ERA (11 ER/44.0 IP) and a .204 opponent batting average in that time. Acquired via trade from the Baltimore Orioles on July 31, 2014, the Venezuelan left-hander has made 51 starts over three major league seasons, posting a 17-15 record with a 4.10 ERA (132 ER/289.2 IP) and 263 strikeouts against 98 walks. He was honored as the 2015 Red Sox Pitcher of the Year and Red Sox Rookie of the Year by the Boston chapter of the BBWAA.
Workman, 28, has appeared in one game with Boston this season, pitching three scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles on May 4, his first big league appearance since 2014. In nine games with the PawSox this season, the right-hander is 2-1 with a 1.72 ERA (3 ER/15.2 IP) and a .132 opponent batting average (7-for-53). He was also recalled to Boston from May 21-29 without appearing in a game. Selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2010 June Draft, the 2013 World Series champion has 40 games of regular season major league experience (18 starts), going 7-13 with a 4.99 ERA (73 ER/131.2 IP) and 119 strikeouts. He spent the 2016 season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on June 15, 2015.
