Red Sox select eight players on Day Two of 2017 June Draft

The Boston Red Sox today continued their participation in Major League Baseball's 2017 June Draft with eight additional selections in rounds 3-10.

The Boston Red Sox today continued their participation in Major League Baseball's 2017 June Draft with eight additional selections in rounds 3-10. Red Sox Vice President of Amateur Scouting Mike Rikard made the announcement.
Over the first two days of the draft, Boston has selected four right-handed pitchers, three outfielders, and three infielders. Of the 10 players drafted, three are from high school and seven are from college.
With their first pick today, 101st overall, the Red Sox selected 21-year-old second baseman Brett Netzer out of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As a junior in 2017, the left-handed hitting second baseman started each of the 49ers' 58 games and batted .342 (80-for-234) with 16 doubles, four triples, and five home runs en route to All-Conference USA Second Team honors. He drew 29 walks against 27 strikeouts, posting a .425 on-base percentage with 50 runs scored and 44 RBI. A native of Tega Clay, SC, Netzer hit .351 (208-for-593) with a .428 on-base percentage in 152 games over three years with UNC Charlotte.
In the 10th round, the Red Sox selected outfielder Jordan Wren out of Georgia Southern University with the 311th overall pick. Wren, the son of Red Sox Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Frank Wren, played 59 games for the Eagles as a senior in 2017, batting .268 (52-for-194) with 13 doubles, three triples, and six home runs. A native of Peachtree City, GA, the 22-year-old left-handed batter played his freshman season at Samford University and his sophomore year at Gordon State College before spending two years at Georgia Southern. He was also selected by the Red Sox in the 36th round of the 2016 June Draft (1,078th overall), but he did not sign.
