Red Sox Select Eight Players on Day Two of 2019 June Draft

June 5th, 2019

The Boston Red Sox today continued their participation in Major League Baseball’s 2019 First-Year Player Draft with eight additional selections in rounds 3-10.

Over the first two days of the draft, Boston has selected four right-handed pitchers, one left-handed pitcher, two shortstops, two outfielders, and one catcher. Of the 10 players drafted, nine are from college and one is from high school.

With their first pick today, 107th overall, the Red Sox selected right-handed pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn out of the University of Kansas. Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 56 prospect available in this year’s draft, he was previously selected by Tampa Bay in the 37th round of the 2016 June Draft. The six-foot, five-inch right-hander appeared in 47 games (42 starts) over three seasons with the Jayhawks, going 17-12 with 260 strikeouts in 221.0 innings. As a junior in 2019 he earned an All-Big 12 First Team selection, finishing the season 5-2 with a 3.97 ERA (39 ER/88.1 IP), a .193 opponent batting average, 107 strikeouts, and 44 walks. He became the first pitcher in 129 years of Jayhawks baseball to post multiple 100-strikeout seasons, as his 260 strikeouts rank third in program history and are the most for a three-year player. An Academic All-Big 12 honoree, Zeferjahn was born in Topeka, KS, and attended Seaman High School, where he was also a standout basketball player.

In the seventh round, the Red Sox selected right-handed pitcher Brock Bell out of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. His father is Jay Bell, who is currently the manager of the Yankees’ Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre affiliate and who earned two All-Star Game selections during an 18-year major league career spanning the 1986-2003 seasons. Brock’s older brother, Brantley, was selected by Cincinnati in the 11th round of the 2015 June Draft and is currently an infielder with the Reds’ Double-A Chattanooga affiliate.
