HOUSTON, TX - Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that Houston Astros outfielder George Springer has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week of May 29-June 4. This marks the first career Player of the Week award for Springer and the first by an Astros player this season.
During the week, Springer had multiple hits in all six of the Astros games, hitting .500 (15x30) with 11 runs scored, one double, five home runs, 9 RBI and a 1.565 OPS (.531 OBP/1.033 SLG). During the week, he led the AL in runs, hits, home runs, slugging and OPS. Springer currently has a nine-game hitting streak and has scored at least one run in eight straight contests.
Springer had multiple highlights during the week, including a big game on Wednesday, May 31 at MIN, when he tied a franchise record by reaching base safely in all six of his plate appearances, going 4x4 with two home runs and two walks. One of those home runs was measured at 471', the second-longest home run of the season, per Statcast. Yesterday at TEX, Springer had another two-homer game, including his sixth leadoff homer of the season, which ranks tied for first in the Majors.
While this marks the Astros first Player of the Week award this season, Houston has done well in monthly awards, taking home the April Pitcher of the Month (Dallas Keuchel), the May Pitcher of the Month (Lance McCullers Jr.) and the May Player of the Month (Carlos Correa).
The Astros won five Player of the Week Awards in 2016, one by Tyler White (April 4-10), one by Jose Altuve (April 11-17), one by Colby Rasmus (April 18-24) and two by Correa (June 20-26, Aug. 8-14).
In recognition of his American League Player of the Week award, Springer will be awarded a watch courtesy of Rockwell.
