Twins announce September roster additions

Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have selected the contracts of right-handed pitcher Brusdar Graterol and outfielder Ian Miller from Triple-A Rochester. They have also recalled left-handed pitcher Devin Smeltzer and right-handed pitchers Zack Littell and Kohl Stewart. Additionally, they will return both catcher Willians Astudillo and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. from their respective rehab assignments and reinstate both from the 10-day Injured List. 

Graterol, 21, combined to go 7-0 with a 1.92 ERA (61.0 IP, 13 ER) with 23 walks, 61 strikeouts and one save in 18 games (11 starts) between Triple-A Rochester, Double-A Pensacola and the GCL Twins this season. Since the start of August, Graterol appeared solely out of the Blue Wahoos and Red Wings’ bullpens, posting a 2.89 ERA (10.1 IP, 3 ER) with a .152 opponents’ batting average in seven combined appearances. The Twins’ third highest ranked prospect by Baseball America last off-season, he was signed by Minnesota as an undrafted free agent in August of 2014.

Miller, 27, was acquired by the Twins via trade with the Seattle Mariners on August 10, in exchange for cash considerations. In 121 games between Triple-A Tacoma and Triple-A Rochester this season, Miller hit .264 (119-for-450) with 30 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs, 58 RBI, and 72 runs scored, while he led all of Triple-A with 35 stolen bases. The Philadelphia, PA native was originally selected by the Mariners in the 14th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Wagner College in Staten Island, NY.

Smeltzer, who will be in his fifth stint with the Twins this season, has gone 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA (36.0 IP, 16 ER), nine walks, 27 strikeouts and one save in seven games (4 starts) for Minnesota. In 20 games (19 starts) between Triple-A Rochester and Double-A Pensacola this season, Smeltzer went 4-5 with a 2.76 ERA (104.1 IP, 32 ER), 22 walks and 104 strikeouts combined.

Littell, who will be in his fifth stint with the Twins this season, has gone 2-0 with a 3.60 (25.0 IP, 10 ER), seven walks and 22 strikeouts in 19 games for Minnesota. Littell has held opponents scoreless in 16 of his last 17 appearances with the Twins, dating back to late June, posting a 0.96 ERA (18.2 IP, 2 ER) with a .212 opponents’ batting average in during that time. In 20 games (7 starts) for the Red Wings this season, he went 3-3 with a 3.71 ERA (63.0 IP, 26 ER), 25 walks and 68 strikeouts.

Stewart, who will be in his seventh stint with the Twins this season has gone 2-2 with a 5.64 ERA (22.1 IP, 14 ER), seven walks and seven strikeouts in seven games (2 starts) for Minnesota. In 20 games (19 starts) for the Red Wings this season, he went 8-6 with a 5.14 ERA (91.0 IP, 52 ER) with 44 walks and 80 strikeouts.

Astudillo, who missed the Twins last 56 games with a left oblique strain, appeared in a combined 23 games on his rehab assignment at Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Rochester, hitting .411 (39-for-95) with seven home runs, 23 RBI and a 1.094 OPS. Astudillo has appeared in 39 games for the Twins this season, hitting .263 (35-for-133) with seven doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI.

Wade, who missed the Twins last 47 games with a right thumb dislocation, appeared in a combined 10 games on his rehab assignment with Single-A Cedar Rapids and Double-A Pensacola. Wade appeared in two games for the Twins this season, going 0-for-2 with one walk and one run scored.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Twins have recalled not to report right-handed pitcher Sean Poppen and transferred him to the 60-day Injured List. Poppen has been on the minor league injured list with a right elbow contusion.

Double-A Pensacola Pitching Coach Cibney Bello will also join the major league staff. Graterol will wear uniform number 51, Miller will wear number 41 and Bello will wear number 76.

The Twins now have 32 players on their major league roster.
