White Sox claim Jimmy Cordero off waivers from Seattle

Transfer Carlos Rodon to 60-day injured list

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Jimmy Cordero off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and have optioned him to Class AAA Charlotte. To make room for Cordero on the 40-man roster, the White Sox transferred left-hander Carlos Rodón to the 60-day injured list.

Cordero, 27, has combined to go 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA (10 ER/16.2 IP), 20 strikeouts and three saves in 14 appearances this season with Class AAA Fresno in the Washington organization, Class AAA Buffalo (Toronto) and Class AA Arkansas (Seattle). He also appeared in one game with the Blue Jays, suffering the loss on May 22 vs. Boston when he allowed one run over 1.1 IP.

Cordero, 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, began the season in the Nationals system before being claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on May 15 and the Mariners on May 27. A native of San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, he has gone 17-20 with a 4.15 ERA (131 ER/284.1 IP), five saves and 279 strikeouts in 211 games (five starts) over parts of eight minor-league seasons. He also appeared in 22 games in relief with Washington in 2018, going 1-2 with a 5.68 ERA (12 ER/19.0 IP).

Rodón, 26, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on May 2 with left elbow inflammation after going 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA (20 ER/34.2 IP) and 46 strikeouts over seven starts. He was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and underwent successful Tommy John surgery on May 15.

The Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
