Prior to tonight's game vs. the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago White Sox placed outfielder Avisaíl García on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to June 26) with a sprained right thumb, recalled outfielder Willy García from Charlotte and purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Aaron Bummer from Charlotte.
Willy García, 24, is batting .259 (22-85) with five doubles, three triples, one home run, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored in 35 games over two stints with the White Sox this season, his first in the major leagues. He also is hitting .286 (32-112) with six doubles, five homers, 20 RBI and a .396 on-base percentage in 31 games with the Knights.
Bummer, 23, has made 20 combined appearances (one start) between Class AA Birmingham and the Knights this season, going 1-3 with a 2.84 ERA (12 ER/38.0 IP), three saves, 39 strikeouts and a .248 opponents average (34-137). He opened the season with the Barons and made 17 appearances before being promoted to Charlotte on July 17. Bummer has limited opponents to a .140 average with RISP (6-43).
Bummer, a native of Valencia, Calif., has gone 2-7 with a 3.39 ERA (33 ER/87.2 IP), six saves and 100 strikeouts in 59 appearances (one start) over four seasons (2014-17) in the White Sox organization. He owns a career 10.27 strikeout-per-9.0 IP mark. Bummer was selected by the White Sox in the 19th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Nebraska.
Bummer has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 70. He will be just the second White Sox player to wear No. 70, joining left-hander Rich Sauveur in 1996.
Avisaíl García, 26, is hitting .303 (103-340) with 17 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, 54 RBI and 46 runs scored over 88 games with the White Sox. He is tied for fourth in the American League with 11 three-hit games. García was named to his first AL All-Star team earlier this month.
Following the moves, Chicago's 40-man roster is at 36.
