Yankees return home for five-game homestand vs. division & city rivals

Claire Smith to Throw Out Ceremonial First Pitch; Sonny Gray Scheduled to Make Home Debut.

The New York Yankees return home to Yankee Stadium tonight for the first of a brief five-game homestand. The stretch will featurea three-game series vs. their AL East Division rival Boston Red Sox (Friday-Sunday, August 11-13) and a two-game Interleague set vs. their inner-city rival New York Mets (Monday-Tuesday, August 14-15).
The homestand is also scheduled to feature the home debuts of two of the newest Yankees acquired at the MLB trade deadline: right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray and left-handed pitcher Jaime García.
In a special pregame ceremony prior to the Yankees-Mets game on Monday, August 14, the Yankees will recognize Claire Smith -winner of the National Baseball Hall of Fame's 2017 J.G. Taylor Spink Award. Smith will also throw out that night's ceremonial first pitch.
The Spink Award is generally viewed as one of the top honors given to a baseball writer and is presented annually in recognition of meritorious contributions to baseball writing during Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown, New York. Recognized as a pioneer within the baseball community, Smith is one of the first women to cover a Major League Baseball beat extensively and is considered an influential voice in the industry.
Also that night, actor Derek Klena will perform the national anthem. Currently starring in the Broadway musical Anastasia, Klena is also known for his prior work in various Broadway shows including Wicked and The Bridges of Madison County and for his appearances on television shows such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Blue Bloods and Law and Order: SVU.
