Berkman likely to return in limited role

ARLINGTON -- Lance Berkman said he is expecting to be activated on Sunday. But he will likely return in a limited role as a pinch-hitter and occasional designated hitter. He has not played in a Major League game since July 6 while dealing with inflammation in his left hip and a chronic sore right knee.

"I don't know what they're planning on doing with me," Berkman said. "I'll be here and available however they want to use me."

Berkman is used to being an everyday player, and manager Ron Washington said a limited role might be tough on him.

"It probably would, but he's got experience," Washington said. "He'll figure it out, and he'll go up there and get us a hit."

"I have 10,000 at-bats in my career," Berkman said. "I have a lot of experience. If you can't hit by now, you can't hit."

Jurickson Profar has filled in as a part-time designated hitter with Berkman out, and Washington has rotated other players through the position. Berkman was hitting .254 with six home runs and 34 RBIs in 68 games before going on the disabled list.

"The team is playing great," Berkman said. "The last thing you want to do is come in and be a detriment to the mix."
