Berkman's return still unknown to Rangers

CHICAGO -- The Rangers continue to hold out hope that Lance Berkman can help the American League West leaders in some capacity this season, but there is still no word on when the 15-year veteran will return to the field.

One thing the Rangers would like to do, however, is give Berkman some reps in the Minor Leagues before he returns, but the Minors season ends in early September.

If that isn't an option, Rangers manager Ron Washington said Saturday at U.S. Cellular Field that he would have no issues sending Berkman -- on the disabled list since July 7 with inflammation in his left hip and a chronic sore right knee -- to the plate.

"Hopefully, we've got somewhere we can get him some at-bats," Washington said. "If not … he knows what he's doing."

For now, Berkman will continue his rehab work in hopes of a return.

"Hopefully, he's ready to go for us [by Sept. 1 when the roster expands] and help us as we move down the stretch," Washington said.
