Rangers recall RHP Matt West from Triple-A Round Rock, option RHP Phil Irwin to Round Rock

C Geovany Soto transferred from Round Rock to Frisco on injury rehab assignment

The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Matt West (#63) from Triple-A Round Rock and optioned right-handed pitcher Phil Irwin to Round Rock.

West, 25, will be in uniform for tonight's series opener against the Angels, seeking his major league debut. He has a combined 4-2 record with a 3.13 ERA (13 ER/37.1 IP) over 27 relief appearances with Frisco (AA) and Round Rock (AAA) this season, posting 38 strikeouts against 10 walks. He began the year at Double-A before a promotion on May 3. He pitched a scoreless 7th inning in his last outing on Tuesday vs. Colorado Springs (16 pitches/9 strikes).

West was originally drafted by the Rangers out of Houston's Bellaire High School in 2007 as an outfielder, and he spent the first four years of his professional career as a position player before converting to the mound in 2011. This season is the first time in his career to play above A-ball.

Irwin lost his Rangers debut in a start on Tuesday vs. Houston (4.0 IP, 3 R-ER) after being recalled prior to the game. He went 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA (9 ER/33.2 IP) in 7 games/6 starts with Round Rock since being received from Pittsburgh on a waiver claim on May 28.

The Rangers have 39 players on the club's 40-man roster.

SOTO TRANSFERRED FROM ROUND ROCK TO FRISCO: Geovany Soto, who began an injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on July 4, has been transferred to Double-A Frisco, where he is scheduled to continue his rehab. Soto has been on the disabled list all season after surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage in his right knee.
