DeShields' running grab tops defensive gems

MINNEAPOLIS -- Rookie outfielder Delino DeShields' offense has given the Rangers a big boost at the top of their lineup, but it was his defense that stood out in the eighth inning of the Rangers' 3-2 walk-off loss to the Twins on Tuesday night.

The Twins had a runner on second with one out when Brian Dozier drove a 99-mph fastball from reliever Jake Diekman to deep left-center. DeShields raced back and made a leaping, running catch to take away an extra base hit.

"Off the bat, I wasn't thinking," DeShields said. "I was just going after it and I saw I could make a play on it. If that ball drops, the game is different. I'm just trying to help out the pitcher and help out my team."

The defensive gem was just one of many fine defensive plays by the Rangers behind starter Yovani Gallardo and the bullpen. Third baseman Adrian Beltre and shortstop Elvis Andrus both had several crisp plays defensively.

"Really nice defense," manager Jeff Banister said. "That is the way we are going to have to play."
