Ortiz called up to give Rangers extra southpaw

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers called up left-handed reliever Joseph Ortiz from Triple-A Round Rock and optioned right-hander Ross Wolf. The move amounts to four days off for Wolf. He is expected to be called up Tuesday when Round Rock's season ends.

The Rangers simply wanted an extra left-hander in the bullpen this weekend against the Twins and on Monday against the Athletics. This will be Ortiz's fourth time with the Rangers this season, and he is 2-1 with a 3.96 ERA in 25 games with them. Left-handers are hitting .246 off him.

Wolf threw 49 pitches over two innings on Wednesday against the Mariners and would most likely not have been available on Friday night. He is 1-3 with a 4.14 ERA in three starts and 18 relief appearances for the Rangers this season.

"Both guys have done a nice job when they've been here," Daniels said. "This gives us a chance to get an extra left-hander here this weekend."

Because Wolf was optioned, he cannot be recalled on Sunday when the rosters are expanded. He would normally have to wait 10 days, but he can come up on Tuesday because Round Rock's season is over.
