Rainout leads to unprecedented Sunday DH

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers will host the first split doubleheader in club history on Sunday after Saturday's game with the Angels was postponed by rain.

The first game will start at 12:05 p.m. CT with Yu Darvish pitching for the Rangers against right-hander Zack Greinke for the Angels. The second game will start at 6:05 with Derek Holland pitching against Ervin Santana.

"I don't like doubleheaders, but it will be beneficial," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "If we've got to play it, we'll go play it. It's something that has to be done. It's beneficial that we don't have to play in this" -- meaning that rain that fell all afternoon.

Saturday's game was postponed after a three-hour, 55-minute delay with more rain expected through the night.

"Everybody would've been staying if there was a reasonable chance we could play," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "But I think we're looking at a situation where they said that at no time tonight is it going to be dry. And really, virtually no possibility of getting started and it being light enough to be able to just continue to play through."

Holland was supposed to pitch on Saturday with Darvish on Sunday. Washington decided to have Darvish pitch first.

"It's Darvish's day to pitch so we wanted to get him out there as soon as we can." Washington said. "Holland will pick him up."

Scioscia is also using his Sunday starter to pitch in Game 1.

"We'll see if Zack can get us some length in Game 1 and then we have a chance to have more pitchers that aren't going to have to throw in two games," Scioscia said. "I think it just gives us a better chance with Zack in Game 1 to pitch deep into [the game] and get to a certain point, and then we'll see where we are in Game 2."

Tickets from Saturday's game may be used only for the second game on Sunday. All activities scheduled for Fan Appreciation Day will take place during the first game. The parking lots will open at 10 a.m. and the gates will open at 10:30.

The Ballpark will be emptied after Game 1. The Rangers have never played such a split doubleheader in Arlington but have done so six times on the road.

Both games will be broadcast on FOX Sports Southwest.
