ARLINGTON -- The Rangers on Tuesday rounded out their Major League coaching staff by hiring Oscar Marin as bullpen coach and Callix Crabbe as assistant hitting coach.
Crabbe brings a unique resume to a Major League coaching staff, having spent the past six seasons as a baseball instructor and coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He also founded the Crabbe-ology Sports Development in 2015, where he provides instruction in hitting, defense, baserunning, bunting, game strategy, personal development and physical conditioning.
Crabbe was originally selected by the Brewers in the 12th round of the 2002 MLB Draft and he spent 10 years in professional baseball as a middle infielder. He was selected by the Padres in the 2007 Rule 5 Draft and he appeared in 21 games with the club at the beginning of the 2008 season. That is his only Major League experience.
Marin spent the past two seasons with the Mariners as their Minor League pitching coordinator. Prior to that, he spent six seasons as a pitching coach in the Rangers' organization, and he had a direct impact on helping Alex Claudio mature into a Major League reliever.
Crabbe will work with Major League hitting coach Luis Ortiz, while Marin will assist pitching coach Julio Rangel. The rest of the coaching staff includes bench coach Don Wakamatsu, third-base coach Tony Beasley and first-base coach Hector Ortiz. In addition, Jayce Tingler will serve as field coordinator.
Training staff complete
The Rangers announced that Jacob Newburn has been promoted to assistant trainer, and the club named Regan Wong as physical therapist.
Newburn has spent the past three seasons as trainer at Double-A Frisco and he is entering his 14th season in the Rangers' organization. He is a native of Richardson, Texas, receiving his Bachelor's degree from the University of Tulsa and his master's from UNLV.
Wong is now full time with the Rangers after serving in a similar capacity over the past four seasons while continuing to work at TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington. The Mansfield resident earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Ithaca (N.Y.) College, and he also obtained a doctorate degree from the University of St. Augustine in Florida.
Pitchers and catchers report
The Rangers announced that pitchers and catchers will report to Spring Training on Feb. 12, with the first workout slated for the following day. Infielders and outfielders are to report on Feb. 18.
