Rangers take it slow with rehabbing rotation trio

Miller, Volquez, Smyly throwing another live BP before game action

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Rangers have Mike Minor and Lance Lynn plugged into their Cactus League schedule but are holding back on Shelby Miller, Edinson Volquez and Drew Smyly.

Minor is scheduled to pitch on Monday against the Reds in Goodyear and Lynn will go Tuesday against the Mariners in Peoria. But the Rangers have not yet scheduled a first start for Miller, Volquez and Smyly.

All three are coming back from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery. Volquez and Miller threw live batting practice for the first time on Wednesday and Smyly is scheduled to do so on Thursday. They will get at least one more live batting-practice session before the Rangers consider using them in a Cactus League game.

“We need to take care of those arms,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “There is no need to rush into this. A lot of these young pitchers are going to get a lot of innings.”

Feigl vs. Feigl

Brady Feigl is not related to Brady Feigl. They look alike, down to the red hair, glasses and beard, but a DNA test done by Inside Edition showed that they are not related.

Maybe that’s why the Brady Feigl who pitches in the Rangers' organization is left-handed and the one who pitches in the Athletics' farm system is right-handed. The lefty, 28, is almost five years older and from Maryland, while the right-hander, 23, is from Mississippi.

But the physical resemblance and same chosen profession is eerie. They have also both had Tommy John surgery.

“We are both German, though,” said the Rangers' Feigl. “I’m 53 percent German.”

The Rangers acquired their Feigl two years ago in a trade for the Braves. The Athletics drafted their Feigl in the fifth round last year out of the University of Mississippi. That’s when people started noticing there were two Minor League pitchers with the same name.

Inside Edition interviewed them last year in the Minor Leagues and followed up with DNA tests this spring to see whether they are related.

“It’s very interesting,” said the Rangers' Feigl. “Got the opportunity to learn where I was from, where my family originated. Just to see there is another Feigl out there, I think it’s pretty cool.”

Athletics wanted Kelley back

Reliever Shawn Kelley, signed by the Rangers this offseason, was unceremoniously designated for assignment by the Nationals last year, but was much more appreciated by the Athletics. He had a 2.16 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP in 19 games for them at the end of the season.

“That was a guy I really wanted back,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. “He acclimates to any role that he is on. He is all about the team. He is not afraid to come in when guys are on base. He’s not afraid if he has to pitch a second inning. He was so good for us. We are going to miss him, he’s a good pickup for the Rangers.”

Kelley said he was hoping to go back, but the Athletics signed Joakim Soria and picked up their option on Fernando Rodney. That left him available for the Rangers to add him to their bullpen.

Rangers beat

• Outfielder Hunter Pence, who is sidelined with a sore right shoulder, took swings off a batting tee on Wednesday but has yet to start a throwing program. He also stood in and tracked pitches while pitchers Miguel Del Pozo and Yoel Espinal threw live batting practice.

• Asdrubal Cabrera, who was signed to be the Rangers' third baseman, is not scheduled to play in the early Cactus Leagues games. The Rangers want him to get extra work at third base with infield coach Tony Beasley first.

• The Rangers' pitchers for their first Cactus League game on Saturday against the Royals are Ariel Jurado, Adrian Sampson, Jonathan Hernandez, Luke Farrell, Michael Tonkin, Yoel Espina and Kyle Bird.

• Yohander Mendez will start on Sunday against the Brewers in Surprise. He will be followed by Joe Palumbo, one of the Rangers' top pitching prospects who made a strong recovery from Tommy John surgery. He was 2-4 with a 2.78 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP in 11 Minor League starts.
