Surprise, Ariz. — The Texas Rangers today acquired right-handed pitcher Josh Sborz from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jhan Zambrano. To make room on the Major League roster for Sborz, the Rangers have designated right-handed pitcher Jimmy Herget for assignment.

Sborz, 27, made 4 relief appearances spanning four stints for the Dodgers in 2020, allowing one run/earned run in 4.1 innings. He was designated for assignment on February 11 when the Dodgers formally announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Trevor Bauer. Sborz did not appear in the 2020 postseason, but was a member of the taxi squad for the entirety of the Dodgers’ run to a World Series title, including for the final three rounds at Globe Life Field.

Sborz has spent his entire professional career in the Dodgers organization since he was selected in the second round of the 2015 June draft out of the University of Virginia. He has made a total of 11 relief appearances in his Major League career spanning 2019-20 for Los Angeles-NL, allowing 9 runs/earned runs in 13.1 innings. Over five season in the minors, Sborz has averaged 9.1 strikeouts per 9 innings and just 0.6 home runs allowed per 9 innings.

Zambrano, 19, saw his only professional action with the Rangers’ Dominican Summer League affiliates in 2019, combining for a 2.55 ERA and 1.083 WHIP figure over 12 games/11 starts.

Herget had a 3.20 ERA over 20 games/one start with the Rangers in 2020 after being acquired from Cincinnati in a waiver claim on December 2, 2019. He was re-signed by Texas on December 11, 2020 after he was not tendered a contract offer prior to the deadline on December 2, 2020. The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright Herget to the minor leagues.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers still have 71 players on the club’s Spring Training roster: a full 40-man roster along with 31 non-roster invitees.
