Rangers select contract of INF Josh Jung, recall INF/OF Josh Smith from Round Rock

INF/OF Brad Miller placed on Injured List, INF Ezequiel Duran optioned in series of roster moves

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced the following roster moves over the last two days:

FRIDAY TRANSACTIONS

  • INF Josh Jung (#6) contract selected from Round Rock (AAA)
  • INF/OF Brad Miller placed on 10-day Injured List with right hip strain

THURSDAY TRANSACTIONS

  • INF/OF Josh Smith recalled from Round Rock (AAA)
  • INF Ezequiel Duran optioned to Round Rock (AAA)

Jung (pronounced “young”) had his contract formally selected today and is seeking in MLB debut tonight. He has played in 31 games with Round Rock and the Arizona Complex League Rangers (Rookie) this season, batting .266/.326/.540/.866 with 9 home runs and 29 RBI. The infielder has spent most of season doing rehab work following surgery on Feb. 23 to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, an injury suffered while lifting weights in early February.

He played 8 games on injury rehab assignment with the ACL Rangers (.240/.345/.600/.945, 3 HR, 5 RBI) from July 28-August 6 before being activated from the Round Rock Injured List on August 9. He batted .273/.321/.525/.846 with 6 home runs and 24 RBI in 23 games with the Express. His last game was on Wed. vs. Sugar Land (1-4, 2B, HBP, R).

Jung entered today as the no. 1 Texas prospect and 39th overall prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. He was rated the preseason no. 2 prospect and top position player prospect in the Texas system by Baseball America. The San Antonio native was selected by the Rangers in the first round (8th overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech University.

Smith will be in his second stint with the Rangers, as he batted .218 with one home run and 12 RBI over 50 games during his first Major League stint from May 30-August 20. He was also on the 10-day Injured List from June 4-13 with a left shoulder sprain. He has spent the balance of this season at Triple-A, slashing .290/.395/.466/.861 with 6 home runs and 45 RBI over 55 games. Smith compiled an 11-game hitting streak during his most recent stint with Round Rock, batting .386 (17-44) with 2 home runs, 2 triples, 5 doubles, and 15 RBI.

Miller is batting .212 with 7 home runs and 32 RBIs in 81 games this season. He has not appeared in a game in September, with his last game action coming on August 31 vs. Houston. This will be his third Injured List of 2022, as he was also sidelined from July 18-August 4 with a neck strain and from May 30-June 9 with right hip impingement.

Duran has batted .236 with 5 home runs and 25 RBI over 58 games spanning two stints with the Rangers in his first Major League action: June 4-25 and July 21-Sept. 7. The infielder has spent the balance of 2022 with Round Rock and Frisco (AA), totaling a .310/.354/.579/.933 slash line with 13 home runs and 48 RBI over 63 games.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers have 28 active players and 40 players on the Major League roster, along with three players (Mitch Garver, Josh Sborz, and Eli White) on the 60-day Injured List.
