Rays recall Rhymes from Triple-A Durham

ST. PETERSBURG -- After optioning reliever Josh Lueke to Triple-A Durham on Thursday, the Rays had a roster spot to fill before Friday's game against the Orioles.

The club elected to recall infielder Will Rhymes from Durham after he had a strong two weeks in the Minors.

In his last 10 games with the Bulls, Rhymes was 14-for-38 with nine RBIs and a homer.

"He's been swinging the bat well back in Triple-A," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He gives us other options. I like him as a pinch-hitter, too, because I know he's gonna move the baseball."

Rhymes last played for Tampa Bay on July 16 and was batting .233 with a home run and eight RBIs in the Majors this season prior to being sent down.

With the addition of infielder Ryan Roberts, playing time may be hard to come by for Rhymes, but Maddon said he's confident in the 29-year-old as a starter or off the bench.

"The versatility is there. It'll be about matchups," Maddon said.
