Rays add Romo to roster, release Weeks

July 24th, 2017

ST. PETERSBURG -- was acquired Saturday night from the Dodgers for cash considerations. The Rays added the right-hander to the active roster on Monday, prompting a couple of roster moves.
The team optioned right-hander to Triple-A Durham. In addition, the Rays activated and released first baseman Rickie Weeks Jr., who had been on the 10-day DL since June 9 (retroactive to June 7) with a right shoulder impingement. Romo will take Weeks' spot on the 40-man roster.

"I'm excited for the new challenge," Romo said. "This is a new league with a lot of new faces I haven't seen. But they haven't seen me either. What they've got going on here in Tampa, it's been solid, it's competitive, it's young and it's aggressive. And it's fun to watch from a fan standpoint. Now being able to be a part of that I'm excited, because they honestly believe I can come in and help.
"I know I'm going to do well here. It has a good feeling. A good vibe already, the way they've welcomed me up to this point."
Romo saw immediate action in Monday night's 5-0 loss to the Orioles. He entered in the eighth inning and allowed one run on two hits while striking out for his first K as a Ray.
Rays manager Kevin Cash is "genuinely excited about" Romo.
"He's going to be a nice addition to our bullpen," Cash said. "Probably a calming influence, since he's been there and done that. And also, he's got value in there. I know he got beat up a little bit in L.A., but the way we're looking at it, he's coming over to the American League. Not a lot of history with the teams he's facing. Hopefully that's an advantage for him and us."
Cash said Kittredge "didn't get the best look."
"But I liked the way he threw the ball," Cash said. "We've had some guys come up here who have not been able to get the ball across the plate. Andrew did. And [if need arises], I know we'd feel comfortable having him up here."
As for Weeks, Cash complimented the veteran's influence on the Rays, but said "it just came down to a roster spot."
"We just didn't have it for him," Cash said.
