Rays claim Bucs' Sands off waivers

ST. PETERSBURG -- Tampa Bay has claimed outfielder-first baseman Jerry Sands off waivers from Pittsburgh.

Sands, 26, appeared in the Major Leagues with the Dodgers in 2011 and '12, batting a combined .244 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 70 games.

Originally drafted by the Dodgers in 2008, the right-handed-hitting Sands was involved in two trades in 2012. He was part of the trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez from the Red Sox to the Dodgers and the deal that sent pitcher Joel Hanrahan from the Pirates to the Red Sox.

Sands spent the 2013 season with the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis, batting .207 with seven home runs and 34 RBIs in 106 games.
