Rays put Jennings on DL with left hamstring strain

Reliever Sturdevant recalled from Triple-A Durham

July 4th, 2016

ST. PETERSBURG -- Desmond Jennings' injury-prone career added another chapter on Monday.
The Rays placed Jennings on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, retroactive to Friday. Relief pitcher Tyler Sturdevant was recalled from Triple-A Durham.
Jennings exited the Rays' 10-7 loss on Thursday after rounding first base awkwardly on a double. He was on the bench for precautionary reasons the next two days, and Rays manager Kevin Cash said on Sunday that Jennings was feeling better.
Jennings said the condition of his leg had not improved much, but when asked if he felt he'd be able to return once he was eligible to come off the DL, he replied: "I don't see why not."
Jennings' most injury-filled season came in 2015, when he was limited to 28 games due to left knee injuries that required two trips to the DL and later a tooth infection that ended his season, spending a total of 133 games on the DL.
In 2014, he missed the final month of the season due to a bruised left knee, and in 2013, he missed 12 games due to a fractured left middle finger. In 2012 he missed 21 games with a left knee sprain.
Jennings' Minor League career also was dotted with injuries. He missed the start of the 2010 season due to a left wrist sprain, while a back injury claimed the first two months of his 2008 season at Class A Vero Beach. When he returned, he lasted just 24 games with Vero Beach before his left shoulder required season-ending surgery.
Jennings has batted .202 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in 63 games this season.
Sturdevant, who was optioned to Durham after allowing three runs in two innings vs. the Orioles June 25, has gone 0-1 with a 4.80 ERA in 15 innings over 13 appearances with the Rays this season. He had tossed four scoreless innings with Durham since his demotion.
