Rays complete deal with prospect Marte

December 18th, 2017

The Rays officially signed 16-year-old international free agent Jelfry Marte on Monday.
Reports of the signing first surfaced on Day 2 of Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings.
Marte originally signed with the Twins for $3 million, but the shortstop's contract was voided because of a vision issue.

Marte was ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the No. 3 prospect in this year's international class. He's impressed scouts with his quick hands and impressive foot speed. He also has a strong arm in addition to top defensive skills.
At the plate, Marte has good bat speed and an ability to make hard contact from both sides of the plate.
Having approximately $440,000 to spend during the current international signing period, the Rays acquired additional funds last week by trading left-hander Anthony Misiewicz to the Mariners.
