Torres does his part in shutout of Orioles

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays pitchers retired the final 12 batters they faced during Saturday's 8-0 win over the Orioles.

Alex Torres contributed to that success by pitching a scoreless seventh inning that saw him strike out Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy.

Torres has now made five appearances in two stints with the Rays this season, and he has yet to be scored upon. In 11 1/3 innings, the 25-year-old left-hander has allowed one hit and three walks while striking out 14.

"He's done a nice job," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He's becoming a little bit of a weapon right now."

Torres was 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA, 61 strikeouts and 21 walks in nine starts for Triple-A Durham this season.
