NEW YORK -- Rays third baseman left Sunday’s 13-5 loss to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium after being hit on the left hand by a pitch thrown by Yankees reliever . The injury was deemed a left hand contusion after X-rays came back negative, and Diaz is day to day.

“We’ll see when he wakes up tomorrow. I’m sure the off-day will be a somewhat welcome for him,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

The Yankees were leading, 12-5, when Diaz came to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning and was struck by a 2-2 pitch. He was taken out of the game and replaced by pinch-runner .

Cash didn’t think Adams hit Diaz on purpose. There has been tension between the two clubs in recent weeks. On Friday, tried to hit with a pitch.

“Look, [Adams is a] young pitcher. He is trying to make a pitch,” Cash said.
