PHOENIX -- The proximity of the Reds' player development complex in Goodyear, Ariz., allowed injured Reds pitcher Anthony DeSclafani to get a slight reprieve from the isolation of rehabilitating from a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
DeSclafani threw a bullpen session at Chase Field on Friday, tossing 40 pitches, and is with the club during the weekend series vs. the D-backs.
"Yesterday was the third bullpen," DeSclafani said on Saturday. "I started spinning some stuff yesterday. I threw everything. I threw all my pitches, too -- some change-ups, curve, slider. It all felt pretty good. Everything was in the zone or around it."
DeSclafani, who was injured in mid-March, was cleared to begin a throwing program on May 19 after being examined in Cincinnati. He has reported no setbacks since.
"I've made every scheduled throwing session, bullpen, flat-ground. It's been going well so far, so hopefully it stays the course," DeSclafani said.
DeSclafani is throwing bullpen sessions every third day, but a timetable for his return from the 60-day disabled list remains fluid. The right-hander hoped he could rejoin the rotation sometime in August.
"He'll certainly go down and throw live BP or simulated games before he goes out to start a rehab assignment," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We want to make sure he's far enough along that those 30 days will provide him the window to be all the way ready by the time those 30 days expire. I'm not saying he will require all 30 days, but we'd like to have them, that buffer, in case we feel like we need to add another outing to his rehab."
DeSclafani, who is renting a house near the team complex during the blazing hot Arizona summer, looked forward to being back with the club full time.
"I think I'm definitely seeing the light," DeSclafani said. "I think I've been here long enough that it should be coming up pretty soon. [Assuming] everything goes well, it should be pretty soon."
Worth noting
• The Reds have mostly set their rotation coming out of the All-Star break next week. Price said that Homer Bailey would be the third starter, followed by Scott Feldman and Sal Romano. What has yet to be determined is who would start the first two games, but it will be a combo of Tim Adleman and Luis Castillo.
"That's the probable right now," Price said. "We have to make sure we have the guy ready to throw that first game back. Sometimes that is the biggest challenge, where the guy will be and how to get him ready coming out of the break."
• Starting pitcher Rookie Davis, who is on Triple-A Louisville's disabled list with a back injury, is three starts into a rehab assignment. Davis last pitched 4 2/3 innings for Double-A Pensacola on Wednesday.
