My Reds Media Day Experience

A visit through the Reds High School Media Days program

Special to

Last night I got a taste of what I would love my future to be! I had the opportunity to take a tour of the Cincinnati Reds media areas before the game. I arrived about two and a half hours before game time to watch the closed off Reds batting practice. We walked down the stairs into the lower tunnel. I was in heaven looking around and seeing the visiting club house and walking up the stairs of the dugout onto the field of Great American Ball Park. We stood outside on the field in a roped off area watching the duration of the Reds Batting practice. Watching the celebrity announcers and analysts walk around joking with players, managers, and coaches just showed me how awesome sports broadcasting could be. I got the opportunity to talk to "Reds Live" anchor Jeff Piecoro. I reached out to him for insight about the announcing business as he also does color commentary for Kentucky Football, where I'll be attending in the fall. He was very nice and it was a great opportunity to talk to him.

When then went down to the on field interview room where we had a sit down session with Reds Public Relations director, Rob Butcher. He gave us some great advice about getting into the journalism and media world along with telling us what it is that he does. It was a great thing to hear what goes on behind the scenes in the media and how baseball media relations differ from other sports.

Finally we took an extended tour upstairs inside press row and the scoreboard operation room. GABP has one of the nicest and most spacious press areas in league. There's no doubt that if I were to get a job in media that I would love to have it here in Cincinnati. This opportunity that I had down at GABP last night was something I'll never forget and has made me want to go after a job in the broadcast world even more.
