MILWAUKEE -- Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco left Tuesday's 2-0 loss to the Brewers in the sixth inning due to a bruised right wrist. X-rays were negative.
Leading off in the top of the second inning, Mesoraco was hit by a pitch from Brewers starter Junior Guerra. He did not receive any extra looks on the field from the trainers and remained in the game. Mesoraco struck out in the fourth inning.
Before the bottom of the sixth inning, Tucker Barnhart took over behind the plate.
"It was his right wrist, so throwing, hitting, everything, it just got worse," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Typically, with a contusion, it starts to feel worse over the course of a game as opposed to better with time. We'll see how he is [Wednesday], if there are some things he can do for us off the bench. I think he'll be able to catch and do whatever he needs to back there, but we'll see how he can handle the bat."
Mesoraco can feel fortunate it was not a serious injury. Due to five stints on the disabled list and three major surgeries, he has been limited to 95 games over the last three seasons.
Already operating short with a four-man bench, the Reds do not have any other catchers -- besides Barnhart and Mesoraco -- on their 40-man roster. However, they have Stuart Turner, Tony Cruz and Joe Hudson at Triple-A Louisville. Any of the three would require removing someone from the 40-man roster to be called up.
