'Jackie' sneakers collab a hit for Reds HOF

April 26th, 2021

Over the weekend, the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum presented by Dinsmore continued celebrating Jackie Robinson through a special collaboration with local sneaker and clothing boutique, Corporate.

On April 24, the Reds Hall of Fame served as the pickup site for a limited-edition Nike sneaker: the Air Max Griffey 1 “Jackie Robinson.”

The shoe pairs the sweet-swinging Ken Griffey Jr. and his iconic Swingman brand with one of the most influential and important figures in Major League Baseball history in Jackie Robinson. The commemorative sneakers dropped on Saturday as an extension to the April 15 celebration of Jackie Robinson Day and were scooped up quickly by shoe collectors and baseball fans alike.

Those who purchased the shoes through Corporate were invited to pick them up at the Reds Hall of Fame on Saturday. In addition to getting their shoes, purchasers were invited to stay and tour the Reds Hall of Fame.

“The story of Jackie Robinson and his impact on the game and society cannot be told enough,” Reds Hall of Fame executive director Rick Walls said. “Anytime we can further his legacy, we’re all in, and supporting a local business aimed at celebrating Jackie through this special 'Griffey 1, Jackie Robinson' pair of shoes does exactly that.”

Features of the shoe include Robinson’s No. 42 replacing Griffey’s No. 24 on the ankle and insoles. Embossed on the ankle strap is one of Robinson’s famous quotes: “There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free.”

Corporate, located in Hyde Park, has been a Cincinnati staple since 2008, serving both as a premier sneaker and clothing shop and as a beacon in the local community. The minority-owned business works to highlight local brands and artists while also helping teens in the area through its Bigger Than Sneakers non-profit.

The Reds continue making it a point of emphasis to work and build ongoing relationships with diverse business partners, and Corporate is the latest example. The two already teamed up once for a project surrounding Jackie Robinson Day, collaborating on limited edition Jackie Robinson hats. The Reds hats, which included a No. 42 patch and a “Thank you Jackie!” inscription, were made available to purchase at the Reds Hall of Fame with all profits benefiting the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

After the joint venture with the hats and shoe release event, don’t be surprised to see the local business and team work together again.

“Honestly it’s a dream come true to be able to work with our home team,” Corporate owner Matt Tomamichel said. “We look forward to continuing our partnership and hope everyone is paying attention!”
