Graterol steps up in last-minute Reds debut

July 17th, 2019

CHICAGO -- Before Wednesday’s 5-2 loss to the Cubs, the Reds placed on paternity leave and recalled catcher from Triple-A Louisville to take Iglesias’ place on the roster.

Graterol hit .249/.301/.325 with two home runs and 26 RBIs in 58 games for Triple-A Louisville, and he made his Reds debut on Wednesday, starting behind the plate and batting eighth. He went 1-for-4 in the game and broke up Yu Darvish’s no-hitter with a fifth-inning single.

“He flew in from wherever they were, Pawtucket, I think,” Reds manager David Bell said. “Played last night. Got up early. He’s a good catcher. We’re lucky to have him in the organization.”

“He did a great job,” said Sonny Gray, who tossed six innings, allowing two runs in Wednesday’s loss. “He showed up maybe 30 or 40 minutes before game time. He did a really good job.”

The decision to add a third catcher makes sense for a team with two banged-up backstops. Curt Casali left Monday’s victory over the Cubs after aggravating his right knee inflammation. Bell announced following the loss that Casali will likely have to head to the 10-day injured list. Casali had a large brace around the knee postgame.

Kyle Farmer also had a tough night behind the plate in Tuesday’s loss after taking a pair of foul balls off of his mask, including one that knocked him to the ground, forcing head athletic trainer Steve Baumann and Bell to come and check on him.

Farmer stayed in the game on Tuesday, and he initially was going to start on Wednesday but was replaced in the lineup by Graterol shortly before game time. He was cleared in the concussion protocol during last night’s game, but will have to be re-evaluated on Thursday.

“Everything looked good last night and today, there was just enough concern to have to re-evaluate tomorrow,” Bell said. “We’re concerned for sure about all of those guys.”

Garrett progresses in rehab

Left-hander Amir Garrett took the next step in his rehab progression by throwing live batting practice prior to Wednesday's loss.

Garrett was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left lat strain on July 4 after pitching to a 3-1 record and 1.70 ERA in 42 games this season.

Bell said Garrett will have a scheduled day off on Thursday and the team will decide whether to bring him straight to Cincinnati or send him on a rehab assignment. The plan is for him to return to the Reds' bullpen this weekend.
