CINCINNATI -- The stifling heat of August signifies that the dog days of summer aren’t quite done, but it’s not too early to think warm thoughts about Reds Spring Training in Arizona. 

Major League Baseball released the 2020 Spring Training schedules for all 30 clubs on Monday. Fans will want to circle Feb. 22, because that’s when the Reds open Cactus League play against the Indians at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Ariz.

The Reds will be the “road” team in the opener at their shared facility with Cleveland, as Cincinnati will have its true home opener on Feb. 23 vs. the White Sox. The two Ohio clubs will have two other games against each other, with the Reds serving as the visitors on March 17 and the home team on March 22, the day that camp ends.

There are four games next spring vs. National League Central rivals. The Reds will host the Cubs on March 4 and play them in Mesa, Ariz., on March 19 in a split-squad game. Cincinnati travels to play the Brewers on March 1 in Phoenix, then hosts them in Goodyear on March 5.

Other NL opponents coming to Goodyear Ballpark include the Padres (Feb. 29), the Dodgers (March 2), the D-backs (March 10 in a split-squad game), the Rockies (March 13) and the Giants (March 14).

Other American League opponents scheduled to visit Goodyear include the Mariners (Feb. 26), the Athletics (Feb. 28) and the Royals (March 19 split squad).

No rest for 'The Punisher'
Monday’s series opener vs. the Padres marked the 17th time in 18 games since Aug. 1 that the Reds started rookie Aristides Aquino in right field. Aquino’s last and only off-day came on Aug. 4 at Atlanta.

With the home run tear Aquino has been on -- 11 in his first 17 games -- Reds manager David Bell knows he can’t afford to sit the slugging outfielder.

“He’s a young player. There will come a time, for sure, but there hasn’t been an obvious time to do that yet,” Bell said. “The other thing is, he has such a solid approach right now. When a guy is like that, in some ways it doesn’t matter who is pitching. It’ll happen and there will be a day for that. Not yet.”

Senzel scratched
Center fielder Nick Senzel had to be scratched from Monday’s lineup because of a sore left elbow. During Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Cardinals, Senzel was hit on the elbow by a Jack Flaherty pitch, though he was able to stay in the game after being looked over the Reds' medical staff.
