Reds make themselves at home in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- Doubleheaders in this day and age of the Major Leagues are a rarity, so why not add some extra distinctions to the equation?

Reds clubhouse assistant Josh Stewart doesn't remember having to pack home uniforms for road trips in his 20 years with the club, but the Reds brought the same uniforms they wore Sunday against the Pirates in Cincinnati to San Francisco in anticipation of their two-game anomaly against the Giants.

The Reds will be the visiting team in the first game at AT&T Park, wearing standard grays. Then for the second game, the clubs will play a makeup game for their Fourth of July rainout in Cincinnati, making the Reds the home team in San Francisco. They'll change into their red alternate jerseys with white pants, topped off with their road batting practice hats, which Stewart also said have never been worn outside of BP.

Manager Dusty Baker has said he didn't shower between games of a doubleheader during his playing days, from 1968-86, and now that he's managing, not much will change.

"I'm not sweating anymore or sliding anymore," Baker said. "That's why I used to change before. Now that I'm managing, I wouldn't change unless the weather changed to put a turtleneck on or something like that.

Baker said the only time he's dealt with a similar situation was in 2004, when the Marlins played two games against the Expos at the Chicago White Sox U.S. Cellular Field because of Hurricane Ivan.

It was the first game between two National League teams in an American League venue since 1946, when wet paint forced the Boston Braves and Philadelphia Phillies to play at Fenway Park.
