Red Sox infielder/outfielder Brock Holt will be honored during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park tonight, Friday, September 7, marking the 17th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which pays tribute to the 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer's legacy. Clemente died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
Holt was recently named a 2018 nominee by Major League Baseball for the Roberto Clemente Award, a recognition given to a player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.
Since arriving in Boston, Holt has supported the Red Sox and the Red Sox Foundation's charitable efforts, continuously leading the team in community appearances, including meet-and-greets with fans, baseball clinics with kids, and the donation of unique experiences for Red Sox Foundation auctions.
Holt is best known for his close relationship with the Jimmy Fund and helping to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute with its mission to raise funds for adult and pediatric cancer care and research. He was first introduced to the Jimmy Fund in 2013 when he met patients at the clinic during his rookie development training. Holt has been an advocate and ambassador for the charity in his role as Red Sox Jimmy Fund Captain since 2015, and earlier this season, began a ticket program, "Brock Stars," that hosts Jimmy Fund patients and families at Fenway Park every Tuesday home game.
In 2015, Holt was named the BoSox Club's "Man of the Year," and in 2016, he received the Tim Wakefield Community Service Award at the Boston Baseball Writer's Dinner.
The Roberto Clemente Award winner will be selected by a panel that includes Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., representatives from MLB-affiliated networks (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN and TBS) and MLB Advanced Media, as well as Roberto's late wife Vera Clemente. Fan voting for the award winner is open now through Tuesday, September 18 on mlb.com/clemente21.
