Winter League roundup: Los Mochis takes series lead

Mexican Pacific League

Los Mochis 8, Hermosillo 7
Just when Hermosillo looked to have things locked up, Los Mochis scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to get the win and take a 3-2 series lead in the semifinal. Emmanuel Avila went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Jake Fox went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Jesus Castillo blew his first save of the playoffs, and Oliver Perez recorded his second win.

Navojoa 1, Mexicali 0
Runs were hard to come by in this hard-fought contest, which Navojoa won, taking the semifinal series and advancing to the championship. The game's lone run scored in the bottom of the fourth inning on a home run by Wes Bankston.

Venezuelan Winter League

Caribes 11, Magallanes 8
Caribes upset No. 1 seed Magallanes in Thursday's round-robin playoffs thanks in part to everyone in the lineup belting out at least one hit. Oscar Salazar went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and Cory Aldridge went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Caracas 12, Zulia 11
Caracas and Zulia let their bats do the talking in Thursday's round-robin playoffs, combining for 23 runs on 31 hits. Ultimately, it was Caracas that emerged victorious thanks to a five-run seventh. Henry Blanco went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Daniel Mayora went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Dominican Winter League

Gigantes 9, Licey 6
A five-run third by Gigantes helped lead to a win over Licey in the round-robin playoffs on Thursday. Hector Gomez led the way, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Leury Garcia and Wilson Betemit also had two hits. Rafael Perez got the win, with Ramon Ortiz taking his second loss of the playoffs.

Aguilas 4, Escogido 2
Aguilas got all the offense it needed to defeat Escogido in the sixth inning, scoring four runs en route to the win in the round-robin playoffs. The Yankees' sixth-ranked prospect, Zoilo Almonte, and Jose Manuel Rodriguez each had two hits. Angel Castro got the win; Jonathan Arias took the loss.

Puerto Rican Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente

Caguas 5, Ponce 0
After neither team could plate a run through the first five innings, Caguas scored five runs over the next four to beat Ponce in the round-robin playoffs. The win assures Caguas of a spot in the Puerto Rican Championship Series against Mayaguez. Reds infielder Neftali Soto went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, and Miguel Abreu and Rey Navarro each had two hits from the top of Caguas' order. John Brownell got the win, Logan Williamson the loss.

Mayaguez 7, Carolina 2
Mayaguez took care of business once again against Carolina, to clinch its spot in the finals. Dodgers infielder Dee Gordon led the way, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Bobby Bramhall took his second loss of the playoffs, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings. Jeremy Kehrt earned the win.
