Lineup breakdown: Red Sox-Cardinals, Game 4

A look at Sunday's lineups for Game 4 of the World Series between the Red Sox and the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, airing live on FOX at 8 p.m. ET with first pitch at 8:15 p.m.

RED SOX
On the heels of a wild throw that led to the game-winning run during the Cards' 5-4 triumph in Game 3 on Saturday, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts over his last three games, is headed to the bench. David Ross, who has been predominantly used as a personal catcher for Jon Lester during the Red Sox's playoff run, will get the start behind the plate. Ross is 3-for-7 with a double over his last two starts.

"David Ross has been swinging the bat pretty darn good," manager John Farrell said Saturday.

Stephen Drew is still in the lineup. Drew, who was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in Game 3, is 4-for-44 during the postseason. The only alternative appears to be playing Will Middlebrooks at third and moving Xander Bogaerts to shortstop, though Middlebrooks isn't doing that much better, having gone 4-for-25 with 10 strikeouts this postseason.

Said Farrell, "If we would be able to guarantee an uptick of offensive production elsewhere -- you've got to prioritize one over the other, and the constant has been [Drew's] defense."

Bogaerts is again hitting sixth, and he's been showing incredible poise for a 21-year-old. He was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI single that tied the game in the eighth inning on Saturday.

Right fielder Shane Victorino was a late scratch, replaced by Daniel Nava, who was originally in left field. Jonny Gomes was inserted in left field, hitting fifth.

Clay Buchholz will be on the mound and hit ninth. He's 1-for-3 in his career at the plate.

CARDINALS
Allen Craig, in his third game back after missing 1 1/2 months with a foot injury, gave it everything he had in his run from second to third to home, eventually scoring the winning run for the Cards on Saturday night. He limped off the field in obvious pain and was again held out of the lineup for Game 4, but manager Mike Matheny said Craig will be available off the bench.

"He was sore yesterday, but [X-rays] came back clean," Matheny said. "He'll be ready to go, if we need him.

"Absolutely admire a guy who's given everything he's got when maybe his body doesn't want to. And that's what a competitor does. That's what this stage does to a competitor also."

The Cardinals saw yet another example of how important Matt Carpenter is to their offensive production. He scored two runs Saturday for the first time in 14 postseason games. The Cards went 28-3 when Carpenter scored at least two runs in the regular season

David Freese, hitting .178 this postseason, was dropped to No. 7, while Jon Jay, who hit the ground ball on the game-winning play on Saturday, was moved up to No. 6.

Daniel Descalso replaced Pete Kozma at shortstop. The two have alternated starts during the World Series.
