BOSTON -- Perhaps the most potent final season by any player in history has landed David Ortiz a seventh American League Silver Slugger Award, it was announced on Thursday.
The Silver Slugger Awards, presented by Louisville Slugger, honor the top hitters at each position in their respective leagues. Winners are determined by a vote of Major League Baseball coaches and managers, who were not allowed to vote for players on their own team.
Esurance MLB Awards week concludes Friday on MLB Network and MLB.com at 8 p.m. ET with the MLB Awards. Categories include Best Major Leaguer, Hitter, Pitcher, Rookie and Manager, and recognize overall MLB winners with no league distinction.
Ortiz is joined on the Silver Slugger squad by two teammates who helped make his last season so enjoyable -- outfielder Mookie Betts and shortstop Xander Bogaerts.
This is the first Silver Slugger for Betts and the second for Bogaerts, who also received the honor a year ago.

Big Papi's last season was not just ceremonious, but also more productive than anyone could have imagined.
At the age of 40, the gregarious slugger led the Major Leagues with a 1.021 OPS. Ortiz hit .315 with 48 doubles while clubbing 38 homers and driving in 127 runs. The homer/RBI totals represented Ortiz's best output in a decade.

All the while, along with Betts and Bogaerts, Ortiz helped the Red Sox win 93 games en route to the AL East title.

The statistics showed that the Red Sox boasted the most productive offense in the Major Leagues, and they have the Silver Sluggers to prove it. No team in either league matched Boston's total of three Silver Slugger Awards.
This is the third time in Red Sox history they've had as many as three Silver Sluggers and first since 2011. Ortiz's seven Silver Sluggers are the most by any DH in history.
For Betts, this was the continuation of a successful week in which he's now won two significant awards. On Tuesday, Betts won his first career Rawlings Gold Glove Award for his prowess in right field. On Monday, Betts was named as one of three finalists for the Baseball Writers' Association of America AL Most Valuable Player Award, which will be announced on Nov. 17.

The beauty of Betts is his excellence in all facets of the game. With the bat, he produced a .318 average with 214 hits, 42 doubles, five triples, 31 homers, 113 RBIs and an .897 OPS. Betts stole 26 bases and dazzled with glove and arm in the outfield.
Betts is the seventh Red Sox player to win a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in the same season, joining Dwight Evans (1981), Ellis Burks ('90), Jason Varitek (2005), Dustin Pedroia ('08), Jacoby Ellsbury ('11), and Adrián González ('11). In addition, the electrifying right-handed hitter is the fourth player to win a Silver Slugger under the age of 25, joining Carney Lansford, Nomar Garciaparra and Bogaerts.
Bogaerts is the first Red Sox shortstop to win multiple Silver Slugger Awards, and there could be several more in his future. Despite tailing off in the second half, Bogaerts still ranked fifth in the AL with 192 hits and scored 115 runs. He was at his post nearly every day, starting 157 games at shortstop, tied for second in Red Sox history.

The 24-year-old from Aruba slashed .294/.356/.446 with career highs in homers (21) and RBIs (89).
