The Boston Red Sox today acquired second baseman Ian Kinsler and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Minor League right-handed pitcher Ty Buttrey and Minor League left-handed pitcher Williams Jerez.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Kinsler, 36, has hit .239 (85-for-355) with 20 doubles, 13 home runs, and nine stolen bases in 91 games for the Angels this season. In 51 games since May 29, the right-handed batter has hit .286 (57-for-199) with an .866 OPS, including .417 (20-for-48) with a 1.137 OPS in his last 13 games. He has made each of his 89 starts at second base, having never started at another defensive position in his 13-year major league career. He won the American League's Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2016 and was once again a finalist for the award in 2017.
Selected by Texas in the 17th round of the 2003 June Draft, Kinsler has been named to four American League All-Star teams (2008, '10, '12, '14) and has finished in the top 30 in MVP voting four times, including an 11th-place showing in 2011. He has appeared in 1,764 major league games with the Rangers (2006-13), Tigers (2014-17), and Angels (2018), totaling 1,911 hits, 398 doubles, 41 triples, and 247 home runs while batting .272 with a .785 OPS in his career. Since the start of 2006, he leads all major leaguers in runs scored (1,198).
In 37 career postseason games, Kinsler has hit .291 (39-for-134) with a .400 on-base percentage. He helped lead the Rangers to consecutive World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011, posting a .431 on-base percentage in 12 Fall Classic games. 
Buttrey, 25, has made 32 relief appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket in 2018, recording a 2.25 ERA (11 ER/44.0 IP) and going 1-for-4 in save opportunities with 64 strikeouts and 14 walks. Selected by Boston in the fourth round of the 2012 June Draft, the right-hander worked primarily as a starter until moving to the bullpen in June 2016. In 163 career minor league appearances (65 starts), he has gone 17-33 with a 3.97 ERA (200 ER/453.0 IP).
Jerez, 26, has also spent the entire 2018 season with Pawtucket, going 2-1 with five saves and a 3.63 ERA (21 ER/52.0 IP) in 34 relief outings for the PawSox. He has recorded 69 strikeouts and 24 walks while holding opponents to a .241 batting average. The Dominican Republic native was selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2011 June Draft. In 167 career minor league games (all in relief), the left-hander is 14-14 with a 3.38 ERA (114 ER/303.1 IP).
