Red Sox activate 3B Rafael Devers from 10-day disabled list

Prior to tonight's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox returned third baseman Rafael Devers from his rehab assignment with Short-A Lowell and activated him from the 10-day disabled list. To make room for Devers on the 25-man roster, infielder Tony Renda was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following last night's game.

BOSTON, MA - Prior to tonight's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox returned third baseman Rafael Devers from his rehab assignment with Short-A Lowell and activated him from the 10-day disabled list. To make room for Devers on the 25-man roster, infielder Tony Renda was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following last night's game.

Devers, 21, started at third base in his only rehab game with Lowell on Monday, hitting a solo home run and driving in two. In 96 games with the Red Sox this season, he has hit .245 (90-for-367) with 45 runs scored, 21 doubles, 15 home runs, 52 RBI, and five stolen bases, making 93 starts at third base and one as the designated hitter. In 38 games since June 6, the left-handed hitter has batted .279 (41-for-147) with a .790 OPS, including a .368 clip (7-for-19) over an active five-game hitting streak. Originally signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2013, the Dominican-born third baseman has a .260 career batting average (153-for-589) with 35 doubles, 25 home runs, and 82 RBI over 154 games.
Renda, 27, made his Red Sox debut on Sunday in the club's walk-off win over the Yankees, entering the game as a pinch runner in the 10th inning and scoring the winning run on Andrew Benintendi's walk-off single. Prior to his selection to the major league roster on Saturday, the infielder had split the 2018 season between Pawtucket and Double-A Portland, combining to hit .353 (66-for-187) with 36 runs, 18 doubles, five home runs, 24 RBI, and a .928 OPS. A second-round selection by the Washington Nationals in the 2012 June Draft, the California native made his major league debut with 32 games for the Reds in 2016. In 641 career minor league games across five organizations, he has hit .291 (719-for-2,471) with 158 doubles, 14 triples, 15 home runs, 255 RBI, and 112 stolen bases.
