Red Sox Add Jalen Beeks, Ty Buttrey & Chandler Shepherd to 40-Man Roster

The Boston Red Sox today selected left-handed pitcher Jalen Beeks and right-handed pitcher Chandler Shepherd to the major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. The club also selected right-handed pitcher Ty Buttrey to the major league roster from Double-A Portland.

The Boston Red Sox today selected left-handed pitcher Jalen Beeks and right-handed pitcher Chandler Shepherd to the major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. The club also selected right-handed pitcher Ty Buttrey to the major league roster from Double-A Portland.
Boston's 40-man roster is now at 40.

Beeks, 24, was named Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2017 after going 11-8 with a 3.29 ERA (53 ER/145.0 IP) in 26 starts between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket. The left-hander recorded 9.62 strikeouts per 9.0 innings and held opponents to a .224 batting average, totaling 155 strikeouts against 55 walks. With the Sea Dogs last season, Beeks recorded a 25.0-inning scoreless streak from April 22-May 18, the second-longest in Portland franchise history. Selected by the Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2014 June Draft, he has posted a 3.78 ERA (180 ER/428.1 IP) in 80 minor league appearances (78 starts). Beeks was teammates with Andrew Benintendi at the University of Arkansas in 2014.
Buttrey, 24, posted a 4.81 ERA (34 ER/63.2 IP) with 74 strikeouts between Portland (30 appearances) and Pawtucket (10 appearances) in 2017. The right-handed reliever also pitched for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League, where he allowed only two runs in 8.1 innings (2.16 ERA) with 10 strikeouts in seven outings. In his final five games with the Javelinas, he struck out seven batters and walked none. Selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2012 June Draft, Buttrey began his professional career as a starting pitcher before moving to the bullpen during the 2016 season. In 64 relief appearances for Portland and Pawtucket from 2016-17, he has posted a 4.09 ERA (48 ER/105.2 IP).
Shepherd, 25, made 33 relief appearances and one start for Pawtucket in 2017, his fourth season in the Red Sox minor league system. After earning his first career invitation to major league spring training, the right-hander posted a 1-5 record with two saves and a 4.07 ERA in 59.2 innings for the PawSox, striking out 68 and walking just 18 for a 3.78 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He has since made seven starts for Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League, going 3-2 with a 4.09 ERA (15 ER/33.0 IP) and 31 strikeouts against nine walks. Originally selected by Boston in the 13th round of the 2014 June Draft, the Kentucky native is 10-13 with 16 saves, a 3.42 ERA (85 ER/224.0 IP), and 227 strikeouts in 125 career minor league appearances, including three starts.
