PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Rays and Red Sox played to a 3-3, nine-inning tie Wednesday afternoon at Charlotte Sports Park.
Boston righty Kyle Kendrick, who is 2-0 with a 1.50 spring ERA, delivered five scoreless innings of three-hit ball with six strikeouts and no walks. He hasn't allowed an earned run in his past 15 innings.
"He's been very good, there's no denying it," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "He knows who he is as a pitcher, uses it to the best of his ability. He threw some quality offspeed pitches today for swings and misses."
Matt Andriese, who will begin the season as Tampa Bay's No. 5 starter, threw two shutout innings before Deven Marrero and Dustin Pedroia hit back-to-back singles with one out in the third. Andrew Benintendi's sacrifice fly scored Marrero to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Andriese allowed one run on five hits while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings, which showed marked improvement over his previous outing, when he needed 44 pitches to get through 1 2/3 innings against the Pirates.
"Felt much better," Andriese said. "A lot more comfortable getting through the innings and getting up four times is really good. … Just command and fastball better and trying to get sharp with all my other pitches, too. It was just good to get out there and get three-plus innings after only going one-plus in my last two times out."
Sam Travis hit his third home run of the spring when he took Xavier Cedeno deep in the sixth to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.
Casey Gillaspie's two-run homer -- his third dinger of the week -- highlighted a three-run sixth that put the Rays on top, 3-2. The Red Sox tied it in the eighth on Matt Dominguez's sacrifice fly, scoring Josh Rutledge.
